Speaking Of

I went from 0 to 3 email subscribers. Welcome, all! I don’t know who you are and I’m not going to look at my subscriber list. Your secret is safe with me.

If you’ve never stepped out onto a theatre stage before, you may not know that the darkness of the theater meets the stage lights in such a way that it’s very difficult to see the audience. For that reason, I never feel as close to God as I do when I’m on a stage in front of an audience that I can’t see. It’s an immense act of faith to throw your voice into the void and wait to see who answers.

It’s not the same as giving a presentation in a conference center meeting room where the overhead fluorescents illuminate everyone who looks bored or wants to multitask on their laptop or gazes back at you with cheerful, expectant eyes. It’s still a thrill but it lacks the magic of divine mystery.

I’ve been doing too much writing that feels like a 3pm keynote at a sales conference. Which is to say that I’ve been trying really hard to give my readers what they want: clean, motivational essays about self-care that stick it to The Man without using any swear words.

And just like keynotes at sales conferences, I love doing that. But I also miss the divinity of sharing my voice without knowing who’s listening. That’s what this space is for. Enjoy the show.
